Couples feel all the happier when the news of pregnancy hits them. They feel almost complete by the mere thought that their beloved child is on the way. The husbands somewhat become more careful and more loving to their wives. On the other hand, the expectant mothers are more health-conscious as they do want to secure that their baby will be healthy. The moment of truth now lies in the couple’s capacity to conceive. Both partners may seem normal and health-wise. But there are still millions of cases when fertility seems to be far within reach of plenty of married individuals.

Some women are blessed with the gift of getting pregnant hassle-free while there are those who face traumas and a lot other difficulties to conceive. Women who don’t easily get pregnant must face the fact that there are a lot of factors which may bring about a difficulty in their fertility. Among the many reasons are one’s physical condition, age, and stress.

Are you experiencing various difficulties in getting pregnant? Have you tried all methods but still your efforts are for nothing? It may have been several years since you’ve tried conceiving but then there is no positive result that greets both of you. Now you should come to terms with understanding the truth that women are all different. But to make things easy for you, the medical society makes available the necessary tools for you to take the fertility test.

Types of Fertility Test

The fertility test allows you to know the very reason as to why you find it hard to get pregnant. You may consult your most trusted fertility specialist for this matter.

The Hormone Testing. Various blood tests taken in diverse times are required for the hormone testing. The test is chiefly for the detection of the normal production of hormone. The test hence evaluates the quantity of progesterone you possess and if you will be able to sustain a pregnancy. One of the blood tests done is to verify your prolactin level. It is the hormone that produces the breast milk. Another test is to examine how your thyroid functions.

The Ovulation Test. For this process, your gynecologist will be looking into the regularity of your menstrual cycle. The tool to be used is called the ovulation prediction kit.

The Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Cultures. This test is performed in order to detect the possible presence of these viruses which are possible causes of infertility. They can be prevented but then its detection is difficult.

The Sperm Analysis. The test is conducted to your partner to see the quality and count of the sperm.

The fertility test is one way which helps your doctor detect where the problem lies. Getting pregnant may be possible when the mistake in your body system is corrected.

Being a party animal, getting by on a little sleep, too much alcohol and cigars – all these will have to take a back seat in order to accommodate the beginning of a new life.
Several months prior to conception, both the man and the woman should make sure they are practicing a healthy lifestyle to keep their body in a good condition. This can help minimize risk factors that can hurt the baby or the future parents.
Sometimes, it only takes a healthy lifestyle change to boost the chances of pregnancy especially those who are having problems with infertility and other medical conditions.
The first two to four weeks of pregnancy is very critical. During this time, a tiny placenta and embryo are already attached to the uterine wall. The baby’s development can be greatly affected by the following health and lifestyle issues:
- Serious birth defect called spina bifida is a condition characterized by a baby born with a spine that is not closed. To help prevent this condition, many food items, such as bread, bagels and breakfast cereal, are fortified with folic acid which is effective in reducing the risk of this birth defect.
- Alcohol is associated to premature delivery, mental retardation, birth defects and low-birth-weight babies.
- Smoking can cause conception difficulties and may increase the risk of preterm labor and low birth weight.
- Pregnant women should consult their physicians before taking any over-the-counter and prescription drugs due to the health risk it may cause to the unborn. Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, aspirin compounds and ibuprofen can cause a decrease in the amount of amniotic fluid and cause closure of the ductus arteriosa, an important blood vessel in the baby.
- Cocaine use is detrimental and life-threatening to both mother and baby.
- Pregnant women who have periodontal infections and gum disease can increase the risk of pre-term delivery up to eightfold. Babies born to mothers with these infections are twice as likely to be admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit, and three times more likely to need hospitalization beyond seven days.
According to Michael Greene, MD, Director of Obstetrics at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, obesity is an especially critical issue for women of childbearing age. “Obesity is associated with many complications, because it greatly increases a woman’s risk of developing high blood sugar and diabetes-either before they get pregnant or during their pregnancy,” adds Greene.
The unborn is placed at high risk for a variety of congenital malformations, including defects of the brain and spinal cord brought about by the mother’s obesity and diabetes. The babies are likely to grow large in size making it difficult to have normal delivery and may require ceasarean section.
Depression can also affect pregnancy. Women who get depressed when during pregnancy tend to smoke, drink alcohol or use illegal drugs which are harmful to the baby. Difficulty bonding with the baby and postpartum depression may also occur which is usual in women with a history of depressive illness. The cortisol hormone that the body releases during times of stress seems to make conception more difficult. However, exercise and getting plenty of sleep can help reduce stress.
Women are adviced to see either a doctor or midwife at least 3 months before getting pregnant for pre-conception counseling. This will help women learn about what steps to take to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Keeping a healthy lifestyle over the years can translate into a healthy pregnancy especially when it’s past the prime of fertility years.

You should be able to find several indispensable facts about pregnancy morning sickness in the following article. If there’s at least one fact you didn’t know before, imagine the difference it might make.

Pregnancy morning sickness for some women isn’t just morning sickness, but it is morning, noon, and night sickness. You are sick all the time, and all you want to do is crawl back into bed. When you aren’t hugging the toilet, you are trying to figure out what you can eat so that you won’t end up right back in the bathroom.

There are a number of different types of pregnancy symptoms and whether or not you suffer from any of them is very much dependent on the individual mother-to-be. The majority of women find that their sickness subsides after the first few weeks of pregnancy but others have the nausea for longer.

The first thing you can do to help alleviate pregnancy morning sickness is to keep your blood sugar level stable. Obviously, sleeping will make it difficult to regulate your blood sugar during the night. It is often a good idea is to eat before you get out of bed. Have your significant other bring food to you every morning and take small bites, chewing each bite thoroughly. Give your body time to get the food into your system before you get out of bed and you may be able to avoid some of the nausea you have been feeling.

Pregnancy morning sickness is also triggered by certain foods. Avoid foods that will spike your blood sugar level. Processed sugars and white flour can cause morning sickness during pregnancy. Try whole grain foods and protein, as they are less likely to cause nausea.

Ginger is excellent for helping calm a nauseous stomach. You can buy ginger tea or make your own drink by infusing freshly grated ginger with boiling water and adding some honey and lemon to taste. Many women find that sipping this ginger drink can help soothe the stomach and counter the nausea that is so common to pregnancy. Nibbling on a ginger biscuit can also be very helpful for pregnancy morning sickness.

Your doctor will undoubtedly tell you to drink plenty of water. This is to ensure that dehydration doesn’t become a problem. While this is well-intentioned advice, there are many times that water can make morning sickness worse than it was before. Try some alternatives to water.

Try drinking smoothies with a little plain yogurt with fruit mixed in. Also, you can mix your water with a little lemon or lime juice. You can drink tea rather than water if you like, but make sure it is decaffeinated and weak. Fruits such as melons can help with pregnancy morning sickness . However, you should avoid citrus fruits, as they tend to exaggerate nausea.

It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of pregnancy morning sickness. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

Everyone has different pieces of advice to give women to help alleviate morning sickness. Obviously, trying to eat a dry piece of toast and sip water slowly are the most common suggestions, but regardless of your preference it is still extremely important to stay hydrated.

Another issue that tends to worsen the symptoms of pregnancy morning sickness is odors. This is a huge problem for a number of women. Smells can trigger morning sickness during pregnancy and you will probably find that odors you once found pleasant or that at least didn’t bother you will now cause you to feel ill.

There are steps you can take to alleviate morning sickness due to smells. If cooking certain foods makes you feel nauseous due to the smell, then find alternatives to these foods during pregnancy. Odors that you now seem to find offensive can be avoided if you takes steps to alter your habits until the birth of your baby.

Cravings are another pregnancy symptom that many women suffer from during their pregnancy. You have probably heard about the more strange forms of this pregnancy symptom such as craving coal, soap and dirt, but the vast majority of forms of this pregnancy symptom are far less strange.

Basically, your body is telling you that it is lacking in a particular vitamin or mineral by creating a craving for ice cream and pickles or whatever your particular desire may be. The best advice is to give in to this urge. The comfort eating aspect can help your general mood as well as pacify your body.

You can help ease pregnancy morning sickness by focusing on positive things. Remember that although you may feel constantly ill for the first several weeks of your pregnancy, you are growing another person inside you. This is one of the most amazing, wonderful times in your life, and the nausea you may be feeling will not last forever.

In a few months, a beautiful baby will arrive and your life will be more fulfilled than you could ever imagine. Read baby name books, look at pregnancy clothes, and try to rejoice in the fact that you are about to receive one of life’s greatest little gifts.

The day will come when you can use something you read about here to have a beneficial impact. Then you’ll be glad you took the time to learn more about pregnancy morning sickness.

There are no two pregnancies that are alike so, while it is difficult to say exactly how each will progress, there are certain factors that are common among all women going through pregnancy. Quite often, early symptoms of pregnancy will appear and prompt the soon-to-be mom to purchase a home pregnancy test. These can be found at virtually every retail and/or grocery store. It is important to remember that pregnancy tests, while designed to be accurate, are sometimes wrong. Regardless of the result, it is recommended that women experiencing pregnancy symptoms should schedule an appointment with a health care professional who will accurately test for pregnancy.

Among the pregnancy symptoms that most women experience are heightened sensitivity to certain smells and/or food, exhaustion, recurring morning sickness and mood swings. During the entire pregnancy, it is very important that the woman participate in a healthy lifestyle. Among other things, this would include not smoking or being near secondhand smoke, avoid drinking alcohol, etc. In addition, the mom-to-be should drink plenty of milk and eat healthy foods. This will help to promote good development for the child and will be a healthy start for him/her.

Once a woman is confirmed with pregnancy, the next step is shopping for maternity clothes. There is generally a maternity section of every store, but many women simply wear oversized shirts and comfortable elastic waist pants. Preparing for a new baby will include shopping for nursery items, including a rocking chair, bassinet, baby blankets, clothes and toys. If there are plans to convert any room in the house into a nursery, it’s best to start early. It’s also very important that the mom-to-be not be near any paint or harmful products that may cause her, or her unborn child, any problems.

During the nine months of pregnancy, women will go through a lot of changes – both physically and mentally. Mood swings will become more intense and there may be frequent trips to the bathroom as the pregnancy progresses and the growing child begins to press more heavily on the bladder. After the baby is born, the woman will likely have a desire to lose her pregnancy weight. Immediately following birth, it may be a good idea to rest before starting on any exercise program. A licensed medical doctor will be able to prescribe a timeline for such things as physical activity, which will greatly be determined by the mom’s overall health.

This article is to be used for informational purposes only. It is not designed to be used in conjunction with, or in place of, professional medical advice. Any woman who believes she may be experiencing pregnancy symptoms, or has reason to believe that she may be pregnant, should consult a licensed medical physician for proper testing and determination.

By: John Gibb
One of the first things that happens when a woman visits a doctor either in a visit to discuss becoming pregnant or the first visit after becoming pregnant is that she will receive a prescription for prenatal vitamins. It is such a common occurrence that most women don’t give it a second thought. Vitamin supplementation is generally a debatable topic, but medical doctors agree that it is imperative for women who are pregnant. Consider the last time you had a nasty cold, for example. It is probably the case that your doctor did not prescribe that you take high doses of vitamin C as a treatment method.

Quite often, doctors are reluctant to prescribe vitamins for any health condition. So, why is it that they don’t hesitate to prescribe prenatal vitamins? Quite simply, pregnancy means that a woman has to consume enough nutrients for two lives (more if multiple births are expected).

If people in general don’t consume sufficient vitamins, it only makes sense that women would have a huge deficit of nutrients if they were to become pregnant. Not all prenatal vitamins are the same. While a woman will need sufficient amounts of all essential vitamins and minerals, the most important to a baby are folic acid and calcium. Folic acid is a B vitamin that is essential to prevent birth defects, especially those of the spinal cord and brain. A pregnant woman needs extra calcium so that the baby’s teeth and bones can grow healthy and strong. The additional supply of calcium prevents the baby from the baby having to draw calcium from the mother’s bone.

Of course, every woman has different needs. If you are a vegetarian, have a low tolerance for certain foods, or are on a restricted diet for health reasons, prenatal vitamins can provide you and your baby the nutrients you need that would otherwise not obtain. The exact vitamins you need is a determination that your doctor will make. Some women neglect to take prenatal vitamins and attempt to use a multivitamin instead. This is not a good idea since multivitamins rarely contain the additional nutrients that a woman needs when she is pregnant.

Thousand Now Take Pride In Their Maternity swimwear Who Never Thought They Could.

If you’re pregnant, first of all, congratulations! You are probably wondering whether or not you’ll be able to still do most of the things you enjoyed before you got pregnant. The answer is, of course, yes in most cases.

If you used to swim, there is a line of maternity-swim-wear that will give you clothing that will still fit you. This is hugely important, especially when you consider how much your body will change externally during the pregnancy.

Moderate exercise during a pregnancy is even a good idea since it will help keep both the mother and the baby safe and healthy. The reason for this is that the water provides buoyancy, which makes it easier for her to stay up and perform the exercises that she would like to do.

Maternity swimwear is designed to stretch to accommodate the extra space that the baby is taking up. You can choose between one and two-piece styles and even some styles that look more like traditional maternity shorts and tops. In the end it’s all up to you and how comfortable you feel.

The one-piece styles do nothing to hide your tummy, but you can choose sliming colors and cuts to offset your appearance. Of course, a two piece with a traditional bra top is going to let your tummy hang out for all the world to see, but if that doesn’t bother you, go for it.

There are a lot of people, who think that a woman never looks more beautiful than she does when she’s pregnant, so don’t be surprised if you get a lot of admiring looks!

If you feel more comfortable somewhere in-between, choose a two piece that includes a maternity smock top with a built in bra. This “tankini” look gives you the freedom of movement that a two-piece affords and still keeps your stomach away from prying eyes.

The toughest bit of the 1st trimester of pregnancy is morning sickness and any woman who has gone through or is going through it, knows the first signs usually develop during the month following the first missed menstrual period, when hormone levels increase. It may range from mild, occasional nausea to sever, continuous, debilitating nausea with bouts of vomiting. In most cases, symptoms may be worse in morning, albeit they can strike day or night.

Despite all advances in medicine, there is no way of predicting how long your morning sickness will last even if you have suffered it before. Generally, nausea and vomiting last till about 12 – 13 weeks of pregnancy. However, some women continue to feel ill beyond their 22nd week as well.

However, some studies show that mild to moderate sickness is a sign of a good pregnancy, and less risk of miscarriage.

There is no simple treatment. The best course of action is home treatment. The following tips work wonders not only when you wake up feeling nauseous but also work when you get that queasy feeling during the day.

Changing what, when and how much you eat coupled with certain changes to the way foods cooked helps.

During morning or for that matter all day sickness, you may find that eating five or six small meals, rather than the usual three large ones, is easier on the body. Make sure each meal contains some protein and carbohydrate, like whole wheat bread with grated cheese and a slice of tomato, rice or wheat preparation with some easily digestible / light cereals, orange juice and a whole wheat biscuit. Be creative; choose low fat health foods you know will tempt your appetite. Aversions to food because of nausea are perfectly normal and understandable.

Try not to miss meals

Eat small, dry snacks.

Don’t jump up out of bed immediately. Lie quietly for a while and ask you husband to bring you a slice of fresh lemon or orange or a dry, bland biscuit.

Avoid large drinks, have frequent small one between meals.

Spicy, fried foods, and fatty foods like very rich sweets, are best avoided.

Avoid excessive consumption of pickles or chutney, which is rich in salt.

Don’t spend much time in the kitchen and avoid the strong smell of certain foods when shopping.

Prepare food when feeling least nauseous.

Taking lemon or orange juice in the morning and before meals relieves nausea of early pregnancy.

Suck an ice cube till the nausea passes off.

Sip on cool water.

However, if you have severe, persistent nausea and vomiting, see your doctor. This not so common complication of pregnancy can lead to dehydration and malnutrition, sometimes calling for prescribed medication and in some cases even hospitalization. Although drugs are best avoided in pregnancy, especially in the early months, there are some that have been in use for many years with no apparent danger to the developing baby.

The hike in the rate of sexually transmitted diseases among pregnant women has raised a situation whereby there is no protection against sexually transmitted diseases making the situation of pregnant women worst as compared to women who are not pregnant.

This is a vital fact that STDs contracted during pregnancy is quite life threatening. Most of the women are not even aware of the potential consequences of such diseases even before they get pregnant so they need to know how to protect themselves and their upcoming children from these threats.

The consequences of such sexually transmitted diseases for pregnant women can be same as for non pregnant women but these may lead to devastating effects too such as cervical cancer, chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and other complications.

Very often there are no symptoms among women who are infected with these sexually transmitted diseases and even the women may not be aware that she is infected as such until she is already pregnant.

Many other complications that occur due to sexually transmitted diseases during pregnancy may include early onset of labor or premature rupture of the uterine membranes surrounding the baby and can even cause uterine infection after delivery.

It is quite common that sexually transmitted diseases are being transmitted from pregnant women to her fetus, newborn or any infant before, during or after birth. Certain STD’s such as syphilis even cross the placenta and infect the fetus that affects the fetal development. Many other sexually transmitted diseases include gonorrhea, Chlamydia, hepatitis B and genital herpes that could be transmitted from the pregnant mother to her infant through vaginal delivery. HIV positive women can transmit the virus causing AIDS to the fetus through the placenta while pregnancy or any sort of infection that could occur during the process of birth. Unique to the HIV this is a fact that transmission can occur in infants through breastfeeding by an infected mother.

What is In-Vitro Fertilization?

In-vitro fertilization is a procedure that allows couples who cannot conceive normally to have a child. The woman’s egg and man’s sperm are taken out of the body and fertilized in a laboratory, then put back into a woman who can carry the pregnancy to term.

Many moral and ethical concerns have been raised because of in-vitro fertilization. Those against the procedure say it is too much like playing God. Many women, however, have successfully delivered healthy babies as a result of in-vitro fertilization. Only you can decide if this procedure is the right one for you.

What are the Chances of Success with In-Vitro Fertilization?

“The chance of successful pregnancy with in vitro fertilization is directly related to the age of the woman who provides the egg. Most in vitro fertilization programs divide up their success rates according to age. For example, clinics will report pregnancy rates for women under and over the age of 35 years. There is certainly deterioration in the quality of eggs from the mid-thirties onwards. Some clinics divide up success rates further, and specifically report pregnancy rates for women between the ages of 35 and 37, 38 and 39, 39 to 42, and then over the age of 42.:
- Victoriafertility web site, August 2006

In-vitro has enjoyed a good success rate. Some in-vitro procedures have been too effective, with women giving birth to twins, triplets, or even more babies at once. It’s a good idea to try the process with three or fewer eggs, on the chance that all the eggs will become successfully fertilized and produce children. In-vitro is a viable option for women who cannot naturally conceive.

What are the Dangers of In-Vitro Fertilization?

“One of the commonest serious side effects from using fertility drugs is a condition known as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome becomes a risk in women who develop more than 20 follicles in response to the fertility drugs. In these circumstances the blood estrogen levels are often very high, and this combination causes OHSS.”
- Victoriafertility web site, August 2006

The most common danger of in-vitro is that it will not work. It is very disappointing and depressing for a couple who has tried many methods, only to fail again at in-vitro. There is nothing to suggest that in-vitro fertilization will make natural conception easier or harder for the woman in the future. Medically, the procedure is fairly safe. There is some pain associated with the process of removing the woman’s eggs, however, and there is a surgical procedure involved.

If you are considering in-vitro fertilization, it’s best to discuss your options with your doctor. In-vitro can be a rather invasive procedure. You’ll want to know what your chances are of having a successful pregnancy using this method before you decide to go ahead with in-vitro.

The Pros and Cons of In-Vitro Fertilization

Each woman has to make the decision regarding in-vitro for herself, with the support of her spouse. Many couples face reproductive challenges, and it’s a very common problem that is nothing to be ashamed of. Learn all about your own chances of success with in-vitro before you decide to go through with the procedure, which can be very costly and very invasive to a woman’s body. How much you want to conceive will determine whether or not in-vitro fertilization is right for you.

By: Jacob Felts
Women and babies have been interrelated since the very beginning. It is a natural phenomenon and there is nothing unusual about it. All young women want to bear a child or in other words become a mother. These days even for a career woman the desire to give birth to a child and become a mother is bound to catch up and no other joy can ever replace the joy of becoming a mother in the hustle bustle of everyday life. There are several expectant mothers who suffer from severe stress and emotional turmoil and now the question arises that can pregnancy and the anxiety related to becoming a mother can bring her joy and contentment, equally?

The answer to this question varies from woman to woman. A part of the past life of the expecting mother is always to be brought to light especially when she is going to give birth to a new life.

What things might make it more stressful?

During pregnancy, a woman spends most of her time thinking and being drowned in her thoughts most of the times. The common thoughts during this time are will her new born be normal? will she fail as a mother? Will her baby have to go through the same problems as she had to go in her adolescence? etc etc. This is quite expected as this is a preparatory stage for the mother to love the baby who is growing inside her womb and also her body is preparing to adapt to the changes to meet the demand of the new life which is growing inside of her.

It is seen in most cases that the anxiety during pregnancy triggers stress in the woman. The other factors that might lead to rigorous stress during pregnancy are:
A current miscarriage: This shakes the woman’s confidence and the woman tends to wonder whether she will ever experience the joy of becoming a mother and see her baby cry for the first time.
A uncertain income during the pregnancy
An inconsistent relationship with the baby’s father
No emotional and moral support
Unexpected and unwanted pregnancy that might mess up other plans of life.
It is very essential to be mentally stable during pregnancy and settle all the worries and doubts with her close friends, family members and doctors. It is not impossible to deal with anxiety and pregnancy. Like other crisis of life, pregnancy and anxiety can be very easily dealt with. The pregnant woman is the right person to determine what is best for her baby. No matter what all expecting mothers want to emerge as the best mother and would always want to do the best for the welfare of her child.

However, note that anxiety and pregnancy do not bear good results for the child. Several studies reveal the fact that if the mother is stressful and over anxious during her pregnancy then her baby is bound to develop stressful behavior later in life. Between the 12th and 23rd weeks the baby in the mother’s womb is mostly likely to be affected by its mother’s stress and anxiety.

What good can come out of it?

Other than harboring some negative thoughts the expecting mother makes preparations to deal with anxiety and pregnancy. Several bodily changes take place during pregnancy.

One of the major concerns during this time is that whether their anxiety disorders will affect the unborn and worsen the pregnancy conditions and also after the baby is born whether they will be able to take care of the baby properly or not. Obviously, a great concern is whether or not the symptoms of their anxiety disorder will worsen during the pregnancy, and if they will be able to care for the baby after it is born. Whether intake of different medicines will affect the baby or not is also a cause of concern. All these thoughts however can elevate the levels of stress in the expecting mother.

The following facts can offer some hope for anxiety and pregnancy:
During the pregnancy period and breast feeding period the medicines for anxiety disorders are quite safe for the baby.
About 40% of women experience a precise decrease of the anxiety pattern during pregnancy. However during postpartum the set of anxiety symptoms may return.
The intake of medicines for anxiety disorders by the expecting mother can actually help in preventing the development of anxiety disorders in the baby later in life. If the mother’s symptoms are not treated properly then however it may result in lower birth weight of the baby.
What can be done during pregnancy to deal with anxiety?

About 10% of women develop anxiety symptoms during pregnancy. Following the steps below will definitely help them to deal with the situation in a better way.
Seek advice from your doctor about your plans to either become pregnant, or that you already are. The doctor’s instructions and medications will help you to deal with your anxiety and pregnancy strategically.
Bond with your partner in a more strong and intimate way. This would ensure support and love which would help in dealing with the situations in a better way.
Relax. Pursue hobbies according to your liking. Talk to your friends, go for walks, practice gardening. All these activities will divert you mind and keep your stress under control.
Open up to your husband or partner and close friends and discuss your causes of stress. This will definitely help.
